The past 11 weeks have been a wild ride through data science, history, ontologies, cleaning data, mapping creative, business and financial supply chains, and recognizing on way deeper levels how much narrative economics impacts the creatives and entrepreneurs of the Caribbean and diaspora.

Whether that’s through perception, inherited stories, and who gets framed as “innovative,” “risky,” “investable,” “global,” or “local.”

Which then goes on to shape capital flows, talent migration, institutional confidence, creative valuation, right down to the roots of what people even believe is possible for themselves and communities.

A lot of our ecosystems are far more interconnected than they appear on the surface, yet fragmented by severely outdated beliefs and narratives, extractive systems, and invisible bottlenecks that most people never stop to map but LOVE to argue and debate over.

The deeper I go, the more I realize: many of our biggest challenges are not capability problems but a wicked mix of coordination, infrastructure, trust, and narrative problems.

A capable person operating inside a broken narrative architecture will underperform what their capability actually warrants. Every single time. Architecture isn’t a secondary problem. In many cases it is the primary one.

This is the work I have been stepping into more deliberately.

Across design, technology, brand strategy, and narrative architecture. Not with a complete answer to every problem, but with the specific fluency to move between worlds: between the language of capital and the language of community, between the inherited stories about what the Caribbean produces and the actual evidence of what it is already building.

The kind of positioning work that starts with honest diagnosis rather than aspirational language. Not what you wish you were saying. What the market is actually hearing, and what it would take to close that gap.

The problems are wicked. The entry points are specific. And the work, when it is done well, does not just serve the organization that commissioned it, it shifts something in the ecosystem around it.That is what I am interested in.

That is what I am interested in.

It’s pretty arrogant to think that tomorrow or even the next moment is promised. In the silence between heartbeats, I pray daily we remember what truly matters. Because there’s an unshakable truth that many of us go above and beyond to ignore…we’re here on borrowed time.

The Whisper in the Chariot

Sometime ago I came across a phrase that stopped me in my tracks. Memento mori loosely translated from Latin to mean, “remember you must die.”

Allegedly, the origins of this phrase are credited to the Roman period of time, whenever a victorious general returned home in triumph, parading through the streets while crowds celebrated his glory, a servant would stand behind him in the chariot. The servant’s apparent only job? To whisper in the general’s ear: “Respice post te. Hominem te esse memento. Memento mori!” (Look behind you. Remember you are only a human. Remember you must die!).

At the height of glory, someone was there to remind him he was still mortal.

The Stoics like who embraced this practice weren’t being morbid. They understood something most of us spend a lifetime avoiding, that remembering the end is what clarifies the now.

Marcus Aurelius and Seneca used death as a daily grounding tool. As Aurelius has been noted to say, “You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think.”

Even art and religion have their own respective examples, that this concept draws from.

When Everything Changed

As a young lad, death wasn’t a stranger to me, although sometimes I wish it was. I can’t pinpoint the first moment mortality felt real, it just feels like it’s always been the default.

In-between people I had grown to love and respect, from pastors, to people who felt like family but weren’t, to friends that were silently battling demons, and even those who left too soon without warning; grief had been a recurring visitor long before I had the language for it.

But knowing grief and being broken by it are two different things.

Within the span of less than a full year, I lost my cat of 16 years, an amazing woman that took me in like one of her own grandchildren during my formative years, and a good friend who was struggling with more than they let on. Three different kinds of love, gone. I felt angry and sad at the same time. Some would even consider it to be rage. Personally, I think it was love with nowhere to go.

Grief tends to look different on each individual forced to carry it. One thing is certain, it’s a ridiculously heavy load to carry daily and still have to be a functional member of industrial society.

It’s in the little things you start to notice it with at first, laughter feels different, silence hangs a little heavier, and joy carries a hint of ache. You realize immensely that you’re just living on borrowed time, while the clock ticks faster.

The Switch

Something shifted after those experiences. I’m not sure when because it wasn’t a quick experience but it sure was quiet and powerful.

The stupid fears I’d been carrying for years suddenly had light shining on them. The fear of trying. The fear of failing. The fear of being too much or not enough.

So I stopped waiting and started daring myself to start living instead of observing.

My approach to life changed, I found myself slowly having more patience with myself, more love expressed out loud instead of assumed, sharing vulnerability I’d been too guarded to show, embracing goals I’d convinced myself were out of reach.

Little by little the love suddenly had a place to go again and began to realize what nobody tells you about grief, sometimes it cracks you open in ways that let the light in.

What We Should Actually Fear

Memento mori didn’t teach me to fear death.

It taught me to fear an unlived life, that we should fear not living life lovably and abundantly, that we should fear reaching the end having played it safe, having held our love hostage, having let our fears write the story instead of courage and love.

The obstacles will come, pain will always find us at the most unexpected moments but life is ultimately what we make it, and we’re making it every single day, in the risks we take, the love we give or don’t give, the moments we choose to be fully present for or reach for a distraction.

We’re all on borrowed time. The question is what we’re doing with what we’ve been given.

How you fill the gap doesn’t have to be fancy either, often the simple solutions are the elegant ones.

Because there’s a chance that someone is waiting for the good you’ve been over-perfecting.

Abandon all the reasons it won’t work and hold on that little sliver of belief that it will work.

Starting small but thinking big is a superpower.

Stop waiting for perfect conditions, let it be.

The sooner you realize that, the quicker you’ll get to being able to do the fun stuff.

Spend less time being concerned with how other people spend their time.

Obsess over how you’re spending yours.

It’s really just as simple as showing up and helping out.

So here we are with a “evergreen” piece of content with that pop culture sprinkle as the content marketing and search engine optimisation people so desperately love to reference.

Just imagine Santa Claus just starting out with his great idea of wanting to deliver presents.

So he throws up a website, gets a fancy logo, then shouts out his brand statement “Good kids are rewarded while the “bad” get coal in their sock or nothing.”

Eerily translated into a “Ho Ho Ho!”

He goes out and posts an article, then spams every message board, social media group, and post under the hashtags the experts have so graciously guided him to do.

Bam instant success. Wrong.

The same concept applies to us all with SEO or Search Engine Optimization for those who hate abbreviations.

So how does one achieve results in the SEO world?

Well if you truly want to know.. I have compiled a list of ways that over the years have proven invaluable and hopefully will help you avoid some of the common pitfalls and get results.

Never underestimate your work. – Plain and simple. Optimizing your site and maintaining it is hard work. Everyone who has a successful site didn’t just say “Hey everyone, my site is here for you to visit”. They put in the time and dedication to reach where they are now. Just ask Santa Claus.. he’ll tell you just how much overtime he puts in.

Take time to understand your audience. Meaning, why should they show up and why should they stick around?

Take what you see with a grain of salt. – Not everything that glitters is gold. Traffic and earning stats can be created with an image editing program and now they even have generators online that people can use to make you believe that their method of doing things is the greatest.

Do your research and make sure to do it well.

Do not put all your eggs in one basket. – One method is working really well.. and your super confident that you have found the golden egg so why not cancel all the other methods you may be working on.. Don’t… just because one method may be working really well doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use other methods also.

You may realize that somewhere down the road your current “Golden Egg” method may stop working and now you have to go back to square one. Avoid this falling victim to this mind frame at all costs.

Don’t whore out the same techniques. – So you’ve found the working SEO cocktail. Congratulations. But now you think that you can use the same method for every project you may work on.. uh uh. Imagine if Santa Claus used the same techniques that he started out with today. There would be so much fail.

Don’t take shortcuts. – Imagine a young jolly Saint Nick handing out IOU’s to children or handing out cheap presents.. not only would it hurt his reputation but eventually it would just run him out of business. Same thing applies to SEO, don’t take shortcuts.. because as they say “what goes around, comes around.”

Keep it relevant. – If your brand and writing focus is on eco friendly toys don’t go off and start writing about essential oils. By keeping things relevant you’re building a better reputation for yourself, keeping your readers interested and creating relevant keyword relationships that help keep you in the SEO marathon.

Keep it clean. – The most important thing of all… Stay away from Black Hat SEO. By doing this you setting yourself up for future failure and regret. In the end all you’ll end up with is short-term results and long-term penalties.

Think about this for a moment, if Santa Claus used bait and switch methods for getting established, where would he be today?

Whether your designing, writing or something else in the freelance world the most important thing is to keep it simple.

It is way too easy to design with all the cool new ideas that float about around us thinking that we’ll be featured everywhere for having the ultimate design.

So keep things simple.

Just goes to show that creating and sharing content gets a little more complex but also more fun as time goes on.

Oh before we miss the point, the thing that made blogging so fun in the early 2000’s was this unspoken motto: Be curious and share as you grow!

Podcasting is growing at a much faster rate than when it was originally introduced back in the 1980’s, to the point we now have a whole International Podcast day to celebrate.

Today there are over 700,000 active podcasts and more than 29 million podcast episodes according to the research done by companies like Nielsen and Edison.

What we know as podcasting today was known back then as “audioblogging” in a similar fashion to loading audio onto a USB drive, Radio Computing Services (RCS) were used to provide music and talk-related software to radio stations in a digital format aka the first “podcasts”.

As time went on, the internet came alive and the first online radio shows followed shortly after.

By the 2000’s, Apple released the iPod and gave new wings to the industry.

Today, there are thousands of providers, platforms and networks that have been born thanks to this method of storytelling.

While I’m excited to see what the future of podcasting will be, for now here are a few that I enjoy on a regular basis when it comes to leveling up, learning from others mistakes, and expanding my field of vision.

You can have all of the knowledge in this world, even the ability to predict the future but if you do nothing with it, what’s that knowledge really worth?

We’re in an age where everyone wants to be a star and a few are about the execution.

The greats we from history that we often put on a pedestal, as flawed as they may be were individuals that focused on action.

Time to throw away the excuses and embrace the obstacles.

Because if it’s greatness that you seek, take some of that intellect and turn it into action.

I’m always amused by the people who say you need to make a 360 change.

So for me as I chuckle and think to myself, “but don’t you mean a 180?”

Why would anyone want to turn around only to arrive back at the same place they started?

True change happens when you stop going down the path that yields average.

The one you’re unhappy with, that when you really think about it, you realize just what your brand values happen to be.

For life is an exploration.

Business is where the passion of that exploration and the value it brings to others meets to provide sustainability and growth.

If your brand, initiative, or organization isn’t living up to those brand values that were drafted up, the consumer often knows.

Worse if you’re ignoring what truly drives people to buy your product because you’re so focused on what you want to do.

Take a moment to examine how fancy you’re trying to be in comparison to the simple solution the consumer or community is trying to receive.

It may be time to get back to the basics.

Give yourself and your ideas a chance.

Take the brakes off of your ambitions.

The more problems you solve, the deeper the relationship grows, the more your brand values align in the hearts of those seeking it.

Try to be fancy and well, consumers get antsy.

It’s time to bust a 180 and remember why you started.
